The 2011-2012 Somerset-Berkley Regional High School “Blue Raider” Marching Band is led by Drum Majors Kevin Goddu & Kelsie Lazaro, Marching Band President Brian Johnson, Color Guard Captain Mikayla Smith, Battery Percussion Captain Logan Amaral and Pit Percussion Captain Krista Viveiros. A community sponsored organization; the Blue Raider Marching Band has proudly marched down the Main Street of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center and was the first high school marching band to march at MGM Studios.
In addition to the band’s woodwind and brass sections, the band includes battery and pit percussion sections as well as the color guard. After tryouts in the spring, the band practices throughout the summer on a weekly basis in preparation for the Fall NESBA & USSBA Competition Field Show Seasons. All members are helped financially by the Music Department and the Somerset Friends of Music to attend additional summer camps to further develop their skills in the marching arts.
Musicians are auditioned for placement after participation in the town’s very active music program that begins in kindergarten and continues through grade 12. Instrumental lessons are provided in the schools for one to two years with recommendations for further private study. Most band members study privately.
Many of Somerset’s music groups perform for local civic organizations and at other schools. Somerset has hosted six Southeast District Festivals involving hundreds of students. Many guest artists have performed in Somerset including: Maynard Ferguson, Greg Abate, David Martins, Walter Chestnut, Fred Budda, Ritchee Price, James Christiansen, Wendy Klien and The Stan Kenton Band.
The Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts for the Somerset and Somerset-Berkley Regional School Systems is Lori Anderson. Somerset-Berkley Regional High School’s Director of Bands, David M. Marshall is assisted by Visual Designer and Coordinator Lennie Machado, Percussion Caption Head and Battery Percussion Instructor Chris Pantazi, Color Guard Instructor & Drill Instructor Dylan Nauss, Front Ensemble Percussion Tech Brandon Carrita, Drill Tech Sarah Raposo, and Battery Percussion Tech Stephen Murphy.
This year’s field show is an original composition by our director David M. Marshall with Percussion by Percussion Caption Head Adam Willoughby entitled "Vertigo" and is presented in three movements (1. Unbalanced, 2. Symptoms Fading, and 3. Downward Spiral). This season, in addition to football game halftime performances and Grand Day festivities, the band will also performed their field show at the Malden High School NESBA Marching Band Show on October 1, Dartmouth USSBA Marching Band Show on October 8, New Bedford NESBA Marching Band Show on October 9, Cranston East USSBA Marching Band Show on October 15, Billerica High School NESBA Marching Band Show on October 29, NESBA Championship Marching Band Finals at Lawrence High School on October 30, USSBA New England Championships in Bridgeport, CT, USSBA National Championships at J.
