I spent 6 1/2 years teaching strings in Somerset
(1988-1994). I remember my students and experiences with great fondness and
love. I have been married to Eric Badertscher for 10 years...after meeting him
at grad school at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. We have one daughter,
Sarah, who is 8. She is quite the dancer, artist, and violin player in her own
right. I run my own string studio in Annapolis, teaching privately and building
ensembles to play in the community. I try to teach my students the passion and
love for music and the arts that was taught to me as I grew up in Somerset. I
also play in several orchestras in the Annapolis area, including lots of musical
theatre which is very popular around here.
Experience with Somerset Music:
My experiences are unique in that I have been both a
student and a teacher in the Somerset Music Dept. As a student, I was challenged
and pushed to be the best I could be. There were so many
experiences....concerts, trips, rehearsals, friendships made. As a teacher, I
was also challenged to be the best I could be...I was very grateful to be able
to work in the Music Dept. for my first teaching job out of school. I learned so
much from my peers and from the students themselves. I hope that I gave my
students some of the experiences and memories that were given to me.

there always has to be music around me, it is uplifting.
Experience with Somerset Music:
The Somerset Music Department was the highlight of my high
school career. I made some of my best and greatest friends there. Everything
from singing in the auditorium to marching down Main St. USA in Disney remains a
happy and loved memory in my heart and mind. Finding that connection to music in
my life meant more than most of what I actually learned at the school. I will

without music and what the middle and high school years would have been like
without the music department and Mr. Soares and Dr. Perry. I am so happy to now

I am still very much involved in music, both as a composer
and a performer. I am currently a member of the Middlesex Concert Band
(Wakefield, MA) and the Charles River Wind Ensemble (Watertown, MA). I have
previously played with such groups as the Tri-County Symphonic Band (Marion,
MA), the Southeastern Massachusetts Wind Symphony (Norton, MA), the Atlantic
Wind Symphony (South Lancaster, MA), the Great Woods Chamber Orchestra (Norton,
MA), the North Tiverton Band (North Tiverton, RI), the South Shore Circus
Concert Band, and Pesante Brass, a semi-professional tuba quartet that I helped
to form, and also write and arrange music for. In April of 2006 I was featured
as euphonium soloist with the Southeastern Massachusetts Wind Symphony at their
annual spring concert, performing the "Willson Suite" by Robert W. Smith and
"Seascape: A Dramatic Intermezzo" by Alfred Reed. I have also given private
instrumental lessons to junior high and high school-aged students, and acted as
an adjudicator for the Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters
Association’s Junior/ Senior Music Festival auditions. As a composer, I have
written music for many special events and occasions. I hold a Bachelor of Music
degree in composition and theory from the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst. My music has been performed or used in venues such as the Annual
Southeastern Massachusetts Low Brass Symposium, the Epic Brass Summer Brass
Players’ Institute, the Northeast Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, and the 2003
Minnesota Fringe Theater Festival. I am currently working on a song cycle for
mezzo-soprano and wind ensemble based on poems by my friend, and fellow Somerset
High alum, poet/playwright Timothy Matos. To help pay the bills, I am also
currently working for the Exchange Network, a telemessaging service located in
North Billerica, MA, and have previously worked for such companies as Barnes &
Noble, Borders and Bose Corporation. I will be getting married in November 2007
to my college sweetheart, Elizabeth.
Experience with Somerset Music:
I would not be who or where I am today without the
experiences I had through the music dept. at Somerset High. I have Bob Perry,
Bruce Maggs and Bob Soares to thank for teaching me not only how to be a good
musician, but how to be a good person in general. I will always treasure the
time I spent and the friends I made there.

Through the numerous groups I joined, I was able to mature and be respectful for
life in general. I spent a lot of time helping out with the music department,
especially my senior year. As hectic as my schedule was, I wouldn't have changed
a thing. My four years here at Somerset have inspired me to keep music in my
life for as long as possible.

Graduated with my Bachelor's of Music in Music Therapy in
1990. I have worked continuously as a Board-Certified Music Therapist since
then. I stayed in the Miami area until 1998 and worked with Special Needs
Children/Adults, Geriatrics, Hospice, Rehab and Psychiatric patients. I married
my husband, Robert Lenz, in 1991 and we have 1 daughter, Jackie, born in January
of 1998. He is a journalist who was raised in Miami and consistently worked in
Spanish news, both at the local and national level. In 1998 we left Miami to go
to Atlanta and CNN where he is now a Manager at CNN En Espanol. I have continued
to work and am part of the Creative Arts Therapy Dept. at Emory Eastside
Heritage Center. I work as a Music Therapist primarily with
Geriatric/Psychiatric patients. Even though I now sing and play guitar more, I
still play flute/piccolo and teach lessons out of my home on both guitar and
flute. My daughter is 10 and, of course, loves music. She sings with the
Gwinnett Young Singers; an audition accepted group of youth in our county and
she gets to perform regularly. Both Jackie and I are also involved in Community
Theatre and we've performed together now for the last 3 years. Life has thrown
us some curveballs, but doesn't it do that to everyone? Overall, we are happy,
content and count our blessings everyday.
Experience with Somerset Music:
I found a second family in the Music Dept. at Somerset. By
the time I graduated, I was spending almost the majority of my time at the
school and, in either the band room or the auditorium. I learned to always be
myself and strive for excellence. It was always the best and most influential
aspect of my high school life. Mr. Perry (or Dr. Perry as I've learned!), and
Mr. Maggs were always a constant source of inspiration and support.

Life after School:
I am going to BCC and majoring in Theatre. I still sing
and dance, just not as much anymore. I have been working with different theatre
companies in MA, such as Star Players of Bristol County, Youth Musical Theatre
Corporation and Canton Community Theatre. Right now I am looking for work in the
theatre, but I am working as a dishwasher.
Experience with Somerset Music:
I have had good times with the music department, I have
had bad times with them as well but you can't have one without the other right?
I was dance captain for the show choir from the start until 2006, so 2 years. I
got my start with Guys and Dolls playing Harry the Horse under the direction of
Michael Winslow. After that I joined the concert choir and took part in the two
plays after Guys and Dolls in the ensemble of Jekyll & Hyde and Aida. I have
learned a lot from all the students and teachers of the music department and I
must say its one of the only things I miss about high school.

joined the Lasell Workshop Players (LWP) and we're working on some small theatre
productions that I'm looking forward to doing by the end of the year.
Experience with Somerset Music:
My experience in the Somerset Music Department is sooo beyond words. It is without a single doubt a part of my life that I will never forget. The friendships I built were amazing and still support me to this day. I cannot put into writing the happiness, excitement, fear and sorrow, I experienced with many amazing people. The trip to Virginia Beach, some really hard transitions of directors, all the sweat and hard work building sets, there's just too many to list. It's an experience that changed me "For Good" (Marching Band 2008) and I'll "keep you close as always"

Experience with Somerset
Music:
Dr. Bob Perry was the rare type of person who fought for
Music & Arts in area where it is time and again taken for granted (to this day).
His example, passion, and encouragement helped to motivate me to pursue a career
in music and have the courage follow my dream, when others thought that the only
legitimate option in the field was that of a Music Educator. All of us alumni,
and the community of Somerset as a whole, owe him and people like Alice Arruda a
great cultural debt.My experiences at SHS left me better prepared than many of
my classmates as I began college.

learned in all the years. I cherish the relationships I made, the lessons

21. I am employed as a CNA at a nearby nursing facility. I had gone to college
to be a PTA and I graduated but was unable to pass the state boards. I later
went to school to be a CNA and also went to BCC for medical assisting in which I
graduated in 2007, but I have been unable to find employment in that line of
work but I am still trying.
Experience with Somerset Music:
I had a very pleasurable experience while I was involved with the music program, especially the marching band. I grew so much, learned more about myself and how important music was to me. I made a lot of friends through the marching band. It also taught me self-discipline and gave me self-esteem. I learn a lot from Dr. Perry who gave me a chance when I first started. That meant a great deal to me which is why I still have the utmost respect for him. I also have a great respect for the folks that ran the friends of music at that time. I loved being a part of the marching band. I can remember hearing the marching band play when I was not yet in high school and I thought to myself, someday I am going to be a part of that band and I did just that. I enjoyed every moment of it

Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ was right, there is no place
like home. After having lived in New York for a few years, I convinced my
husband to move to Somerset to start our family. Jim and I have an overly
energetic 6 year old who loves his guitars and wants drums in the worse way. I
work for the State of Massachusetts as an analyst and keep my Emergency Medical
Tech license current. I knew coming back to Somerset would mean Musictown, and
this year, Mrs. Arruda has given me the honor of Alumni Liason, so I'll be in
touch with all of you!
Experience with Somerset Music:
I've performed in Disney World, Virginia Beach, the Mall in Washington DC and football games all over the state. However, the memory that will stay with me forever,is being one of a few that had the pleasure for performing on the front lawn of Mr. Carl McDermott's house for all 4 years, before his death in 1990. Orchestra & String Ensemble
Directors: Dr. Robert Perry, Gerri Potter & Nancy Grey
Years in Program: 4
Life after School:
After high school I attended Rhode Island College, taught
middle school music in Taunton, played for numerous famous musicians throughout
MA, RI and CT such as Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and more. Got
married in 1994 to my wonderful husband Jim and instead of starting a family I
started racing motorcycles with him. I have always continued performing and
still do along with other talented musicians in my group Aire of Elegance as
well as solo. Today along with regularly performing, my husband and I own and
run Simcock Farm in Swansea and travel with our motorcycles as much as the farm
allows. We purchased the family farm in 2001 and have 19 "furkids". Life
couldn't be better or more well rounded!
Experience with Somerset Music:
I would like to thank Dr. Perry for the great four years of playing in the Somerset High School Orchestra and String Ensemble and encouraging me to always strive for more. Without that foundation I would have never had all the wonderful experiences I have had over these past 20+ years. Thank you for all the encouragement and pride you showed during those four years.

Well, some things never change, including my incessant
need to impulsively explore all things that interest me. I went on to complete
Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in applied cello and music education, as well as
a Master's Degree in Library Science. I currently live in Nashville, TN with my
husband of 7 years, Jason. I work full-time at Belmont University as the
managing librarian of the Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Serials Unit. I still
play cello professionally when the gigs come along and I am enjoying breaking
out of my classical training mold, learning to improvise, read charts and play
with world-class musicians at my church. I also hope to join Nashville's Drum
and Bugle Corp, The Music City Legend. You can take the girl out of the drum
major uniform, but you can't take the drum major out of the girl ;-)
Experience with Somerset Music:
At the risk of sounding melodramatic, my experiences in
the music department really shaped my life. Moments like leading the band down
the streets of Epcot are part of my fond memories, but more importantly, I feel
blessed that I still maintain friendships with some of my dearest friends from
the music department. Dr. Perry always saw more potential in me than I saw in
myself and I appreciate the challenges he offered me.

I am currently a Music Education major at the University of Delaware.
Experience with Somerset Music:
To say that I was deeply impacted by my experiences with the Somerset Music
Department would be an understatement. My involvement with the music ensembles
at SHS, especially marching band and show choir, taught me so much. So many
amazing opportunities were created through my involvement in these groups. It
was an incredible experience that played a huge part in shaping the person that
I am today. And it INSPIRED me. The connections that I made with my fellow
students and teachers/directors convinced me that that was what I wanted to do
with my life. I can't wait to get out into the world of music education to lead,
influence, and inspire future generations of young musicians.

I had a licensed Daycare in my home for many years, having taken care of many
students that were in the Music Program at Somerset High School. Being a single
parent and raising 3 children, I wanted to be home with them. I also worked at
Caldor`s for 9 years until it closed. I then was an assistant teacher at a
preschool in Seekonk until I retired. I have been a member of the Somerset
Friends of Music since 1982. I received the MMEA Advocacy Award (Massachusetts
Music Educator`s Association) in 2000. I have been Corresponding Secretary for
Somerset Friends of Music for many years. I also received a Somerset High School
Recognition Award in 2004. I have 3 children, 2 of whom were in the Somerset
Music program. I am very grateful to Dr. Perry for all his guidance to my
children. They are partly whom they are today because of him. My son, David,
Class of 1986, played Trumpet in all the groups. He is presently a Family Dr. in
New York State and his wife is also a Family Doctor with her own practice. They
have 3 boys. My daughter, Sheri, Class of 1989,played Flute, Piccolo and French
Horn. She lives in Feeding Hills, MA is married to Richard Cormier, is a
Pharmacist and has 2 boys. I have stayed active in the Somerset Friends of Music
for so many years after my children graduated to try and give back to other
students what my children received from the Music Department.
Experience with Somerset Music:
Being involved with the Somerset Friends of Music has given me some of the
fondest memories I have. I went on many trips and chaperoned trips. I was able
to be involved with my children as well as other students and that is what it is
all about.

I married Mark Watkinson who I met during our years in the Music Dept. We have
been married for 24 years. We have 3 children, Melody (a senior in the current
music dept.), Annalyn (who is in 8th grade) and Anthony (5th grade.) I have kept
singing as a big part of my life and for years I sang at weddings and funerals.
About 3 years ago, I started visiting nursing homes and sang for the residents.
They liked it very much and a business was formed called AMW Entertainment. I
now visit about 40 nursing homes and entertain them with all kinds of music from
the 40's to Celine Dion. Performing for these wonderful people has become a very
special part of my life.
Experience with Somerset Music:
Being in the Somerset Music Dept. has meant a great deal to me. I met my husband

Director: Dr. Robert Perry & Mr. Bruce Maggs
Years in Program: 4
Life after School:
I lived and worked in Washington, DC right after college. Then, I got married
and moved to Atlanta. Worked in my field, International Business. Past 10 years,
I've been raising 2 sons. I play in the
Seed & Feed Marching Abominable Band
and my church orchestra. My 12 year old son is now playing
trombone with me. Younger son wants to play bugle. I'm active as a Boy Scout
Leader as well.
Experience with Somerset Music:
Music was everything to me at SHS. All my friends were in band. I spend all my spare time playing. Mr. Perry was definitely my most influential teacher. His lessons on mediocrity and Bill Cosby's Noah are still with me today. SHS Band trip to DC freshman year ('81) helped me to fall in love with DC, where I went to college.
